JUNGWON PHEE (b. 1993, South Korea) is a visual artist who studied Fine Arts in Painting and Art History at Pratt Institute. His artwork, Untitled: The Black Path CDXVII, is a painterly attempt to accumulate emotional residues on the surface through the collision and layering of matter. Phee recently exhibited at Gallery Hayashi, Tokyo, and Kornfeld Galerie, Berlin.

As shown on the third image, Phee attaches small samples of the materials he used at the time of creation to the wooden stretcher bar on the reverse of the canvas. He also keeps additional samples in his studio. Over time, he uses the changes in color, texture, and cracking—both on the painting itself and on these reference materials—as a way to verify the artwork’s authenticity and condition.
