Kolja Kärtner Sainz paints in oil and ink, searching for an intermediate state in which representation and abstraction can coexist. He works associatively and without preliminary sketches, building many layers of heavily diluted paint into matt, transparent surfaces that keep the traces of how they were made. His paintings take states of nature and the artificial as a starting point and hold on to blurs, movement and shifts in perception, so that figuration and abstraction stay locked together in a state of constant change.
