Artist
Marcel Walldorf
Born 1983 in Friedberg (Hesse), lives and works in Frankfurt am Main
Marcel Walldorf makes satirical sculpture, often at life size, in materials ranging from steel, silicone, plaster and hemp rope to porcelain and taxidermy, and also works with drawing and video. He turns everyday objects and familiar situations into sculpture: a breaded and deep-fried leather wallet, a deconstructed cat scratching post, a glazed porcelain dog with real fur showing from underneath. Wordplay and humour make the work readable well beyond the art world, while its targets are social conventions, gender roles, precarious everyday life and the mechanisms of the art market. Walldorf aims his critique at systems and conditions, and leaves the layers of meaning open for viewers to find.
