Nicholas Stewens works across painting, sculpture and installation, using oil on canvas, coloured pencil, MDF, wooden beams, wall paint and lacquer. His practice has moved from making images towards installations and sculptural gestures that present them, drawing on monuments, pedestals and the romantic. Stewens is drawn to imagery with a subtle undercurrent of violence and to situations unaware of their own hostile nature, with themes that move between glorification and guilt. He values humour and openly accessible meaning over a private artistic language.
