Sevina Tzánou

Born 1994 in Athens, lives and works in Bonn and Athens

Sevina Tzánou paints in oil and acrylic on canvas, moving between abstraction and figuration, and also works with performance. Her paintings draw on her involvement in burlesque and drag communities, showing performers both in hedonistic nightlife and in mundane, unguarded moments. Exaggerated markers of femininity such as long nails, high heels and intense poses expose femininity as a construction while claiming it as a source of strength. Tzánou also brings in her Greek heritage and questions of migration through references to Greek cinema, folk memorabilia and family memory.
