Artist
Fabian Warnsing
Born 1991 in Unna, lives and works in Berlin
Fabian Warnsing paints in oil and acrylic on canvas and draws in pen on paper, showing scenes from everyday life that are sometimes elaborate and rich in detail, sometimes only implied and sketchily assembled. He collects images continuously from films, books, photographs, museums and the computer screen, building an expanding archive that he combines into compositions held together by open association. His pictures mix styles and play foreground against background, with layers, over-paintings, corrections and gaps left visible as part of the image. A reduced, chromatic visual language draws on early video games and the flaws and glitches of the digital image, while flat, fragmented compositions recall ancient mosaics and modernist painting. Moving between figuration and abstraction, Warnsing's paintings question habits of seeing and the nature of the image itself.
