Jeong Hwa Min makes illustrations and paintings in acrylic on paper and wood, working by hand with airbrush and self-cut stencils, often at large format, and binding books by her own methods. Her pictures tell abstract and geometric stories drawn from the physical world and the world of objects. Taking her cue from form, light and shadow in nature, she sets sharp angles against soft edges and curves against straight lines, so that each picture shifts between two and three dimensions. Soft pastels, cobalt blue and textured black-and-white gradients build surreal landscapes and still lifes of houseplants, folds and horizons that sit between still life, sculpture and pattern. Min's earlier work filled the page with layered, colourful narratives; her recent pictures are reduced and minimal, open to several readings at once.
