Lena Marie Emrich is a sculptor working in glass, terracotta and metal, whose practice interweaves sculpture, performance and documentation with video, photography, text and digital tools such as social platforms and found footage. She turns to the marginal and the social: car tuning races and drifting, abandoned airports, arenas, hip-hop videos, mass tourism and the rituals of air travel all feed the work. Emrich is drawn to absurd interruptions of everyday rituals and works with the history and architecture of the spaces she shows in. Her works describe the encounter between seemingly rigid everyday objects and human longing, held in a restrained formal language. In one ongoing series, negative casts of the body and poems in shorthand turn simple poses into tools of empowerment.
