Zac Yeates

Born in Perth, Australia

Zac Yeates paints in gouache, acrylic and oil stick, building his surfaces in layers and blending with his fingers to reach soft gradients. His absurd, surreal figures live in atmospheric worlds that feel familiar and faintly uncanny at once. Cowboys, wrestlers, magicians and household objects such as a vacuum cleaner are personified with sausage-like lips and googly eyes, characters who seem out of place in society yet belong completely to the world of the picture. The films of Yorgos Lanthimos are a point of reference, and the paintings sit between the absurd and the comedy of ordinary life, holding a feeling of discomfort until the only thing left to do is laugh.
