Ruohan Wang

Born in Beijing, lives and works in Berlin

Ruohan Wang works across painting, illustration, print, animation, sculpture and object design, by hand and digitally. Her scenes are full of colourful characters engaged in strange antics, taken from the funny things that make up daily life, and she returns again and again to the simple nature of humankind and its relationship with nature and the domestic environment. Colour carries much of the work: Wang pairs pastels with bold primaries or neon, layers colours until a picture is colourful yet harmonious, and treats the palette with an almost mathematical logic. She separates the elements of a composition through contrasts of texture as much as line, and combines still images with animated GIFs. Across media she is after the moment that catches time, movement and energy transformation, somewhere between realness and unrealness, order and chaos.
