Bastian Thiery

Born 1990, lives and works in Berlin

Bastian Thiery makes photographs from a documentary position and pushes it towards constructing images. He often works at night with a bright flash, catching people, pets, scavengers and street detritus in a sudden burst of light against deep black. Thiery is drawn to improvised encounters, quick portraits of strangers on the street, and to individual expression, fashion and humour. His book Humpelfuchs began as a search for a limping fox in Neukölln's Weserkiez and became a fable-like record of everything he found along the way: pulpy snapshots of the everyday with the charge of a crime scene, broken by moments of softness.
