Donnie O’Donnell

Lives and works in Manchester

Donnie O’Donnell works across painting, illustration, murals and wooden objects, drawing on contemporary folk art, DIY graphics and a sensibility rooted in skate culture. His subjects are mostly animals and plants: stylised birds, horses and other creatures alongside recurring symbols, painted in bright but gentle palettes with simple colour pairings that aim for harmony over effect. Repeating, pixel-like grids structure many of the compositions, loosened by an unpredictable hand that keeps the surfaces handmade and imperfect. O’Donnell paints from instinct and for the joy animals give him, and much of the work lives in its small repetitions and variations.
