Egor Lovki

Born 1997 in Russia

Egor Lovki works across painting and mosaic, setting stones on board or combining oil paintings, painted surfaces, thread and canvas with mosaic elements in large wall installations. His playful pictorial worlds are peopled by animals and figures that resist identification, open points of identification that quietly unsettle social hierarchies and outdated values. Lovki is concerned with collectively internalised symbols and the expectations built on them, and with the influence of institutions on children and education. Recurring devices include primary colours, gestures borrowed from silent film, and trompe-l'œil figures that seem to advance and recede at once. Humour and optimism run through the work, even where it touches on pressure and indoctrination.
