Artist
Georg Haberler
Born 1985 in Graz, lives and works in Vienna
Georg Haberler makes mixed-media paintings in acrylic ink and sewing thread, using a sewing machine to draw on canvas, linen and textile so that drawing, painting and sculpture meet in a single surface. Abstract colour fields sit alongside figures and objects: vessels, bowls and bags, real and invented animals, compositions that seem on the verge of collapse yet keep their balance. Haberler leaves the stories open, so each viewer can find their own in them. The back of each work matters as much as the front, carrying threads, stains and gestures that complete the image when it is seen from both sides. Sewing is also a way for Haberler to unsettle conventional ideas of masculinity. In recent installations the work moves beyond the canvas, with animal forms cut free from the pictorial ground and painted stripes carrying the composition onto the gallery wall.
