Jung A Lee

Born 1995, lives and works in Berlin

Jung A Lee draws with wax pastels, crayons and coloured pencils on canvas, often unstretched and hung like a scroll, or floating off the wall so that the work casts a shadow. She works mostly in the mornings, straight after waking, to catch what remains of sleep, and the immediacy of the medium lets her work intuitively. Abstract colour fields and plant-like forms spread across the surface, with fleeting hints of people, animals, architecture and landscape that appear and vanish in a dreamlike flow. Lee's subjects include the layered structure of the mind, the relationship between inner and outer worlds, and intimacy in both its tender and burdensome forms, informed by the Buddhist idea of dependent arising and Derrida's notion of absolute hospitality. Morning light moving through her room recurs as a source.
