Artist
Juno Rothaug
Born 1999 in Hamburg, lives and works in Hamburg
Juno Rothaug paints in oil on canvas, from intimate formats to canvases almost three metres wide, using strong colour and contrast to move between abstraction and figuration. Each painting starts from a figurative idea, often taken from art history or personal experience and sketched roughly on paper, with attention to the dynamics between elements and little to detail. Rothaug treats these references as a method, a way of entering into dialogue with painting and with problems other artists have tried to solve before. While painting she revises repeatedly, laying flat areas over the original image so that details surface and disappear again, and the energy of the process shows in shifting textures and in the play of depth and flatness. In recent work she uses 3D modelling software such as Blender to build her own creatures and worlds and to disguise her references in advance. Titles such as Angsthasen Unite or Sometimes I Feel Like a Very Old Man work as clue and distraction at once, and familiar shapes come and go as they do when watching clouds.
