Artist
Mona Broschár
Born 1985, lives and works in Leipzig
Mona Broschár paints everyday objects and food in acrylic and oil: sausages tied with bows, slices of cake heavy with icing, cupcakes, ice cream, fruit and fake nails. Her compositions are precisely measured and built up slowly in layer upon layer of paint, giving the smooth, hyperreal surfaces an almost sculptural presence that pushes outwards towards the viewer. Isolated and highly stylised, the objects take on a life of their own, as if they had dressed themselves for the occasion. What looks playful at first is where Broschár places the provocation: the pictures swing between the innocent and the lascivious, the delicious and the repugnant, drawing on the seductions of consumer culture and the desires underneath them. They provoke the urge to touch, lick or possess, and then hold the viewer at a distance.
