Nanhee Kim paints large, colourful oil paintings built from jokes, absurdities and stray images. Her sources are conversations with friends, films, Google image searches, Reddit, TikTok and pictures that have gone viral: she takes an idea or phrase she has come across and works out what a fitting image for it might look like. By heightening the personal associations of a situation, Kim turns these inputs into surreal, humorous scenes that sit somewhere between reality and fiction. The humour carries a sharp eye for human behaviour and its absurdities.
