Navot Miller
Portrait: Agustin Farias

Navot Miller paints in oil on canvas, in large flat fields of saturated colour: deep royal blues, near-neon yellows, soft pinks and primaries used in unexpected combinations. Each work begins from his own photographs, videos and screenshots of friends, lovers, strangers and everyday situations, which he sketches directly onto the canvas in oil-based pencil and layers into collage-like compositions, such as two men in a blue pool backed by the red and white stripes of a popcorn bag. His subjects are intimate, often queer moments in banal settings: pools, holiday apartments, the phone on the nightstand, a glance caught through an open door. Motifs from southern Europe, the US and Israel mix, and Miller places his own signature as a logo in different spots across the paintings. His Orthodox Jewish upbringing in Israel and his present life sit side by side in the work, often with a dry irony, and an interest in architecture shows in how he arranges space and colour. The flatness produces a still drama and a sense of voyeurism, while the view stays tender, in paintings about longing and heartbreak.
