Noa Ironic
Born 1993 in Eilat, Israel, lives and works in Brooklyn, New York
Noa Ironic paints in oil on canvas and also works in ceramics. Her paintings take in gender representation, sexuality, death and emotion, along with sentences and situations that keep echoing in her head, and they sit between playful and depressive, humorous and macabre, wretched and stoic. Much of the work looks at Israeli masculinity and a military culture that tells men to suck it up: in one recurring scenario, noble horses carry ridiculous masculine figures who fall and lose control, a collision between man and animal, the artificial and the natural. Ironic develops her characters before she starts to paint, drawing and planning at length, and gives them small details that pull the viewer into their story. The compositions borrow from 1970s comic strips and read like film stills, with humour working both as a staging device and as a way of making difficult subjects bearable.
