Artist
Philip Emde
Born 1976 in Mannheim, lives and works in Cologne
Philip Emde works with drawing, textiles and found stuffed animals. He developed a technique he calls screendrawing, a form of monotype in which he draws directly onto ink-saturated screens, so that every print is a one-off. Emde assembles worn soft toys, among them Steiff animals, into arrangements in the studio, treating them as vessels for the emotions their previous owners projected onto them. His work looks at the strategies children use to make sense of their surroundings, and draws on personal and collective memory, childhood and youth culture, perception and imagination.
