Toninho Dingl

Born 1988 in Burghausen

Toninho Dingl works across painting, sculpture, ceramics and installation, often with found objects, and language plays a major role throughout. His subject is the unstoppable capitalisation of the environment and of the self, approached through satire. SULO-Y, a smart bin that patrols the streets to come to the consumer, arrives with all the buzzwords of Industry 4.0 and is marketed as an investment, a shiny product that does nothing about the waste it collects. Everyday objects and childhood memories, from warning beams, electricity meters, traffic lights and hydrants to vitamin blister packs, become carriers for social and linguistic contradictions, sometimes with text hidden inside large compositions. With a nod to Alexander Kluge and the Frankfurt School, Dingl treats the definition of every object as flexible and tries to loosen the viewer's fixed habits of perception. His humour is dry and pointed, and he turns contemporary social critique on the conventions of Catholic Bavarian imagery.
