Artist
Andy Kassier
Born 1989 in Germany, lives and works in Berlin
Andy Kassier is a conceptual artist working across self-portrait photography, performance, live streams, video, installation, sculpture and painting, on wealth, success and self-representation in the age of social media. Under his own name he has created an alter ego, a successful, carefree persona whose staged life he develops as a long-term performance on Instagram and in exhibition spaces. Through it Kassier observes how digital image cultures shape ideas of happiness, masculinity, self-optimisation and spirituality. Irony is his main tool: the alter ego adopts the poses of the influencer, the entrepreneur and the wellness seeker so completely that the real and the manufactured become impossible to tell apart. Recent works include tall mirrors sand-engraved with short meditative phrases and lit by LED panels, alongside books and paintings that offer a space for reflection while satirising the search for enlightenment.
