Manuel Wroblewski
Born 1975 in Eckernförde, lives and works in Berlin
Manuel Wroblewski makes sculpture, mainly in wood, a material that comes from his years as a boat builder. Wooden fruit and vegetable crates gathered from markets and the street become oversized fruit, vegetables and seafood, painted in gouache and oil to a naturalistic finish and set on columns and pedestals whose geometric designs nod to De Stijl and Brâncuși's plinths. Alongside these he makes anatomical wooden models, boats and sea creatures, and more than a hundred one-off chairs from reused material. The practice keeps waste to a minimum, and Wroblewski wants people to smile when they meet the work.
