Paul Waak

Born 1984 in Dresden, lives and works in Berlin

Paul Waak makes colourful, figurative drawings, paintings and sculptures, and carries his imagery into prints, zines, textiles, furniture, theatre costumes and welded, lacquered stainless steel. Drawing sits at the centre of the practice: Waak makes several hundred drawings a year, numbers and archives them, and returns to this archive to combine motifs and develop them into larger works. Through obsessive repetition, digital deformation and recombination he arrives at intuitive metaphors for existential truths. His subjects are human relationships and the increasing digitalisation of life, held between fond memories and immediate intimacy, violence and innocence, beauty and crime, work and leisure, and delivered with a steady current of humour.
